Die Cutting
Die cutting is the process of cutting out irregular shaped objects from a page with a die. A common method used to generate this die is from an overprinting stroke in your digital files, also known as a dieline. This process is commonly found in the printing industry to create pocket folders, door hangers, custom tabs, and many types of packages.

Focaltone
Focaltone is a color matching system for process color.

Imposition
Imposition is the arranging of pages on a press sheet. Every bindery type like, saddle stitching, perfect binding, ring binding, comb and wire binding, stapling, etc., requires a specific page arrangement on the final press sheet. Different techniques can be used including; step-and-repeat of a page, ganging of multiple pages, signature layouts, and even nesting odd shapes together like unglued envelopes.

Mechanical Issues

There are many mechanical problems that can occur during the offset printing process on press, even though mostly they are managed very well. There are many types of mechanical issues, some of which you can help overcome in your digital files with bleeds for tight trimming, proper use of colors, etc. Others are machine related that can only be minimized by the operators, like smudges, slurring, smears, gear and roller marks, setoffs, hickies, etc.

PDF Files

In 1993, Adobe Systems, Inc. created a Portable Document Format (PDF) for files. This format enables users to view the same content on many independent computer systems using the free Acrobat Reader®. Content in a PDF file includes text, fonts, graphics, and images.

PostScript Files

PostScript® is a Page Description Language (PDL) that is used to describe elements on a page. It is the standard language used in graphic applications to print, export, and generate PDF files. PostScript files can be interpreted by both Acrobat Distiller® to create PDF files, or a Raster Image Processor (RIP) to make proofs and plates.

Press-Ready PDF

A press-ready PDF is simply a relaxed version of the Adobe Setting - PDF/X1a in Acrobat Distiller®. We have deselected the compliance check, and color management settings to accept a wider variety of color images. It is also combined with printing industry standards for file preparation necessary to print from digital files.

Printers Spreads

Printers spreads are pages that are typically arranged in a unique order (imposed) that is plan-dependent based upon the printing press used and the binding style chosen for the job. This is usually reserved for your commercial printer to execute.

Signature

Signatures are press sheets that have document pages arranged in a specific manner, so that when they are folded down to the finished size, they are in the correct page order. Often multiple-page documents like magazines and books have many signatures that insert one inside the other, or stacked one on top of the other, to create the final page sequence.
